The Lord of Hatred expansion gives players a much cleaner way to chase upgrades through Corrupted Roots, and if you're tired of sorting through piles of useless drops, it's worth learning early. These consumables come from Tree of Whispers rewards, but don't rush to spend them the second they land in your bag. Set up your War Plans first. You'll need the Corrupted Roots node unlocked, and it's much better if you've also picked up Roots of Power before you start farming hard. That extra reward boost matters, especially when you're trying to replace weak gear or build up crafting stock instead of wasting time on random D4 items that don't fit your build.
Planting in the right region
The clever part is that Corrupted Roots aren't just another loot button. Where you plant them decides what kind of reward you're aiming for, so the map actually matters. Need boots or Obducite? Go to the Dry Steppes. Looking for chest armor? Khejistan is a strong pick if you also want gold and Scattered Prisms, while the Fractured Peaks leans more toward chest drops and Ruby Fragments. Hawezar is probably where a lot of players will end up, because gloves and Forgotten Souls are both in demand all the time. Scosglen is your helmet stop, Skovos is where you chase two-handed weapons, and Nahantu is handy for rings plus Scrolls of Restoration.
Why groups make the farm better
You can run Corrupted Roots alone, and it'll still help. But if you've got friends online, don't waste the chance. A four-player group can rotate who places the root, while everyone shares the material drops. That means one person spends a consumable, and the whole party gets paid. Then the next player plants theirs. It's simple, but it stretches your roots much further. For materials like Forgotten Souls, this is one of those farms where the difference between solo and group play is huge. You'll feel it after just a few runs, especially if everyone knows where they're going and doesn't stop for every stray pack.
Keeping your Tree progress moving
The trick is keeping Corrupted Roots coming in without turning the grind into a chore. Don't just clear whatever Whisper is nearest. Pick the ones that give good progress fast. Nightmare Dungeons marked by the Tree are great because they award five points, and you can enter them straight from the map without needing a sigil. Rush the objective, skip the trash where you can, and move on. Helltides are useful too, but the Blood Maiden is usually better than wandering around opening chests if speed is the goal. PvP zones are easy to forget, yet killing the Abomination and purifying seeds can fill a big chunk of the bar quickly.
Making the most of every root
It's also worth checking your boss keys before you head out. Sometimes Lair Bosses show the Tree icon, and that lets you stack Whisper progress while hunting uniques or other build pieces. Small habits like that save time over a long session. Corrupted Roots work best when you treat them like a plan, not a gamble: choose the region, bring a party if you can, and spend them when your War Plans are ready. If you're comparing farming routes or looking at D4 items buy options to support a new build, this system gives you a much better idea of what to chase next.
